Hey! Welcome back to our Artist Highlight series. This week we’re gonna be taking a look at New Damage !

Known for their jazzy metal riffs, funky breakdowns, and blissful acoustic ballads, these guys bleed ‘90s-‘00s nostalgia; for Audioslave, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alice in Chains, Slipknot, etcetera. The lineup consists of Nick Yelovich on guitar, Ethan Creveling on bass, Adam Costello on drums, and the very recent addition Raif Groves, also on guitar. Besides being talented musicians, they’re kind of hilarious too; their Instagram is littered with self-made memes, in-sourced flyers for shows, and videos of them fooling around in West Chester. They just released their debut self-titled album a month ago, which I reviewed positively, particularly for its tight execution in reviving funky hard rock. ‘Swarm Inside’ grooves like Parliament, yet the song immediately following in the tracklist, ‘Running Man’, is one of their hardest cuts, with a vicious, slithering guitar line and growling, scream vocals. The closer to their album is ‘Stinky F*cking Cheese’, a song about being high at a cheese store (or maybe they were just high when they wrote it?) and forgetting your order.

They’re charming, they’re talented, and they have aspirations to rule the world (maybe; I didn’t ask, I’m just going off of vibes here). They’re currently finishing writing a new EP and are looking forward to doing more shows in the next year. New Damage adds a diversity to the sounds of West Chester, and they’re definitely a band to keep on your radar.

Precious Little Life (@pll.exe) is a spicy new noise pop/emo band from Philadelphia, PA, comprised of lead singer Kev Nenkov (they/them), Brian Trifaro (he/him), and two new members; synth player and vocalist Meg Bryan (they/she) and guitarist Sam Tate (they/them). I found this band a couple of years ago, during my emo phase (which only started in 2020; I was a late bloomer), and I was soon infatuated with both their experimental tack and with Kurt, their turtle Squishmallow mascot. This band is considered to be a part of fifth wave emo, a subgenre which started around 2019 as Covid forced everyone indoors. That period of solitutde, combined with the high accessibility of music production software, led to tons of musical innocation; one manifestation of which was fifth wave. It’s characterized by digital distortion, LGBTQ+ themes, and is typically produced in home studios. The result is high energy songs about the occasionaly harrowing search for self acceptance in the internet age.

Precious Little Life is notable for their ability to craft tunes that are exceptionally noisy while still retaining pop sensibility. Their heavy use of bit-crush distortion makes you feel like you’re at a raucous live show inside of a mid-2010s Macbook. Their song sturctures are engaging, chock full of bridges, hooks, builds, fake-outs, rebuilds, and explosions. What ties all of the chaos together is an ear for melody and a knack for creating memorable moments in each song, such as the end of their newest single ‘dreamland’, which bursts as Kev confesses, “It started to erase everything I ever made”, ambiguously either a declaration of dissociation or an outburst at having the computer turn off before you got the chance to save your progress.

PLL originally hails from New Brunswick, NJ, but they have been playing lots of shows in and around Philadelphia since 2018. They have an EP slated for December 22nd, and they’re playing a show with myself(!) this Saturday, 11/18 at the Philadelphia venue ‘location.tba’. Follow the band for updates, stream their newest single ‘dreamland’ today, and come out to the show on Saturday! I’d love to see you there.

Hi everyone, and welcome to WCHE's Tracks Of The Week! I'll be covering new releases, both local and popular, that came out this week. Strap in, because we have a lot to cover!

New Damage: With A Smile

New Damage is a West Chester metalcore band, and their new single WIth A Smile comes ahead of their debut album. This band twists metal with funk sensibility. The vocal soars and sneers deviously. The breakdown at the end kicks serious ass, too. I look forward to writing about their record when it arrives.

The Quill Pen Gallery: Tryst

Another one of West Chester’s own, The Quill Pen Gallery, released the first single for their upcoming Halloween release, Do-Overs and New Flings. The guitar riffs brim with indie cool, and Jared Peterson quips crpytically about dormitory architecture and the cons of a night out. It rocks, it interests, and (as before) we will definitely be reviewing this album when it releases.

Sampha: Lahai

Sampha returns 6 years after his debut with his second full-length LP, Lahai. And it is incredible. Lyrically, Sampha flits through dreams, memories, epiphanies, and countries, distilling his experiences into reflections on love and faith. ‘Suspended’ is excellent; the song floats and glows with warm chord changes and textures, evoking the feeling of being ‘suspended’, floating in air about a new love. Sampha is achieving his potential.

Jane Remover: Census Designated

On Jane Remover’s second full length, Census Designated, she turns her attention away from poppy internet scenedom into reflective, lyrically ornate desolation. Over seas of reverb-heavy guitars, Jane journalistically confesses traumas that sound like they happened a day ago. On the single ‘Lips’, Jane vocally floats in the wind alongside psychedellic, bright guitars. She threatens, “Take a step back, boy, I'm so afraid/You want crazy, I’ll give you insane”, and when the drums kick in at 3:20, she makes good on her promise. The album is heavy, both in sonics and lyrics. Best listened to at night, in the dark, alone; it’s a good way to stare at your soul.

Check out these releases and more on this week's Spotify playlist, linked in our story.
